Manchester United paid US$10m to sign an 18-year-old Pellistri from Peñarol in 2020. He has not hit the heights once expected of him, when the former Uruguay international Carlos Aguilera said he had the potential to be “one of the best in the world”. The son of an accountant and a paediatrician whose godfather is a singer in a famous Uruguayan rock band, Pellistri struck the right chords in his first World Cup. He shone as an unexpected starter in Diego Alonso’s team of 2022 but has seen his club career stall in multiple underwhelming loan spells in Spain. Now in Greece on a permanent basis, playing under Rafa Benítez.
