Araújo has come through a difficult spell in his life. He made his senior debut for Rentistas aged 16 and has been under the spotlight ever since. Towards the end of last year, after a red card against Chelsea in the Champions League, he decided he needed to step away from the game to receive treatment for depression, which had been affecting him for more than a year already. “We have to understand that aside from being footballers, we are people,” he said when he made his return 47 days later. The centre-back, who was training with Boca Juniors aged 10, made his international debut at 21. He went to the last World Cup but injury prevented him from making an appearance in Qatar. A two-time La Liga champion, he is now part of Barcelona’s captaincy team.
