Back in form after a difficult spell for country and club, the attacking full-back regained his starting place for both during the 2025-26 season. “Of course, last season was disappointing for me,” he said. “But I’m not the sort of person who harbours frustration. I never had to force myself to get going; I always enjoyed being part of the team and, as a result, was also a role model for others who were going through a difficult time.” He is a very reliable player but opponents of the highest calibre can cause him problems, as was the case in the 4-3 defeat against Germany in March. A captain at Mainz, he is not afraid to discuss sensitive topics and said that if he had to step in as captain during the World Cup in Qatar he would definitely wear the rainbow armband and he has also said he would never play in Saudi Arabia. While injured at Mainz in 2023, he said: “I get to spend more time at home and there I do whatever is needed, whether that is taking packages to the post office or helping my wife Céline with her own company.”
