After a long wait, Kobel has finally become Switzerland’s first-choice goalkeeper following Yann Sommer’s retirement in the autumn of 2024. For the national team he has not yet quite managed to replicate his outstanding form at Borussia Dortmund and it was not until his 13th international that the Zurich-born keeper managed to keep his first clean sheet. Kobel may be the most valuable player in the Swiss squad – according to Transfermarkt – and is an important leader in the squad but he doesn’t like the spotlight and rarely finds himself creating headlines. As a teenager, Kobel was so multi-talented he aspired to a career in tennis, snowboarding or ice hockey as well as football.
