Song became the starting keeper for K League 1 champions Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors at the age of just 21, and has since lifted the title five times. But, due to international teammate Jo Hyeon-woo playing in the same division, it wasn't until last year that he finally earned a spot in the K League 1 Best XI as the league's top keeper. Well respected for his excellent distribution and composure in one-on-one situations, he has a big future with the national side. His name was inspired by the South Korean football legend Cha Bum-kun, a two-time Uefa Cup winner, as his father was a big fan. This also led to his nickname “Song-boom”, a play on Cha's nickname, “Cha-boom”.
