A horror moment for Billy Gilmour triggered the stuff of dreams for Fletcher. The midfielder had been brought in among five youngsters to boost training numbers as Scotland prepared for their friendly against Curaçao. Gilmour sustained a knee injury in the first half of that game, ruling the Napoli player out of the World Cup. Fletcher had impressed in training and during the second half of the Curaçao game to usurp Lennon Miller, Andy Irving and Connor Barron when named as Gilmour’s replacement. The son of the former Scotland captain Darren Fletcher, Tyler’s brother Jack also plays for Manchester United but represents England at youth level.
