Made his debut even before Sepp Blatter announced that Qatar had won the bidding for the 2022 World Cup, and is still going strong, though is not quite the fixture he once was in the centre of midfield, not surprising given that he is closer to 40 than 30. Still has a reputation for scoring important goals – such as the winner in the quarter-final in the 2019 Asian Cup and then hit the target in the final –and spectacular ones too. More often on display are his excellent close control skills, especially as he receives the ball from the defence. Won’t expect too many minutes in the United States.
