A selección stalwart for 16 years and now the captain, Godoy is the leading figure of this Panama squad. He has over 150 caps, three of which came at the 2018 World Cup, and has played in two Gold Cup finals. “Each time I play for Panama, it’s like touching the sky,” he has said. Two decades ago Godoy made his league debut as a teenager for Chepo and immediately became a regular in midfield. His big break with Godoy Cruz in Argentina was followed by a spell in Hungary before his arrival in MLS. After a few years apiece at San Jose Earthquakes and Nashville, he is one of the leaders at San Diego, one of the league’s newest franchises. The left-footed veteran is now a naturalised citizen in the United States.
