Rufer is from Kiwi football royalty – his dad Shane is a former All White while uncle Wynton won four titles with Werder Bremen and was named the Oceania Footballer of the Century. Alex is his club’s longest serving player having debuted as a 17-year-old and in 2024 his leadership, ball-winning ability, and distribution led to him being named in the PFA A-League men’s team of the season. Fun fact: His family are all fishing fans and the rods are usually in the back of the car, he told The Unused Subs podcast. “It actually became something that took my mind away from football and the pressures of that.”
