Guus Til #16

MID · PSV Eindhoven · Surprise call-up · Netherlands

Profile

Born in Zambia, Til’s family moved to Amsterdam when he was three. He was raised in AZ’s youth system, and grew into a solid attacking midfielder who can also do a job up front. He’s an unconventional player, and he has had his detractors – but he isn’t bothered by them. “I think it’s nonsense when people say I’m not good on the ball… And why does it have to look good anyway? I don’t consider myself a beautiful footballer; I’m quite gangly. Have you ever seen Medvedev play tennis? It looks like he has a fly-swatter in his hand. But he is one of the best tennis players in the world.” Speaking before his surprise call-up by Ronald Koeman he told de Volkskrant: “It is nice he is thinking about me. But if it happens, I don’t want it to look like I’m going along as a tourist. I want to go because I can play football well. I’m not going to sit on the bench just for the fun of it.” Whatever happens for Til this summer, don’t expect him to tell you about it: he really doesn’t like interviews. “No, I don’t like them, not at all. Others can talk about me, I’ll show it on the field.”
