Profile
One of the world’s best right-backs, he joined Arsenal in 2023 for £34m from Ajax, but was sidelined in March due to injury, and had to battle hard to be ready for the World Cup. He comes from a strong footballing family: his twin brother Quinten plays for Marseille, and one of his older brothers plays for VVV-Venlo in the second tier of Dutch football. Faith plays a very important role in his life. The former Feyenoord youth and Ajax player always takes a Bible with him to matches and reads Psalm 91 before kick-off, following his mother’s advice. “She told me: ‘Read this before every match, it will give you strength.’ Since then I’ve done that and it has brought success. I take as much as possible from the Bible and try to live as Jesus did, even though that isn’t always easy.” He uses his X account to tweet the passages he’s reading to his 226,000 followers. Sample tweet: “1 Thessalonians 5:8”
