Ghorbani was part of Iran’s national team camps in the build-up to the 2022 World Cup but did not make the final squad. However, over the past four years, with experience gained in the Russian and Emirati leagues, he has become a regular presence in the national team setup, and there was never any doubt that Amir Ghalenoei would pick him in his final squad, even if his place in the starting XI is not secure. Ghorbani is one of those versatile players who over his career has featured in multiple positions, including left-back, centre-back, and even behind the striker, but in the national team he plays only as a defensive midfielder. Like many members of the squad, Ghorbani has spoken of his optimism about Iran’s chances of progressing beyond the group stage. After the draw, he said Iran could beat New Zealand 1-0 or 2-0, take at least a draw against Belgium and Egypt, and qualify for the next round.
