Nadiem Amiri #20
MID · Mainz · Surprise call-up · Germany
Profile
Amiri’s selection was a bit of a surprise. His international career began under Joachim Löw, but he was out of the picture for a long time afterwards, only returning to the fold last year. Julian Nagelsmann still knows Amiri from their Hoffenheim days, when he helped the then 16-year-old begin his professional career, and has praised his “exceptional finishing” and hunger. After picking up a heel injury playing for Mainz, the midfielder missed the March friendlies. In the Bundesliga and in Europe, though, his numbers showed why Nagelsmann could not do without him: 17 goals and three assists, with hardly any other German midfielder posting figures similar. He also made a decisive contribution to World Cup qualification with his first Germany goal against Northern Ireland last September. His cousin Zubayr has over 30 caps for Afghanistan.
