The defender recently outlined his big ambitions. "My goal is to be the best in the world in my position," he said in March. To do that, there is work to be done. "I'm not with Les Bleus to sit on the bench my whole life," he has also said. He is currently not first choice for club nor country, even if Reece James's ability to play in midfield has afforded him more minutes for Chelsea this season. Gusto is driven to succeed in the sport, even if he has vocalised his misgivings about the football world more generally. "Honestly, I don't like it at all. At the start, it was a dream, a parallel world, but now I'm in it, I see the back side; it doesn't necessarily align with my values." He says he plays to make his family proud, and he will look to do that for France this summer.
