Torres surprised everyone with his progress. A skinny boy from Esmeraldas, he didn’t look like an obvious future dominant international centre-back. But Daniel Peña, a club coach on a scouting mission in 2015 to check a different player training for Alianza del Pailón noticed Torres instead, and signed him up. Peña reflected in 2023: “This boy had good ball control, good positioning. He made difficult things look easy. The downside was that he didn't know how to head the ball and he was very skinny. But these days his physique and his heading are his greatest strengths.” A proper leader, he made his international debut in 2019 and brings maturity and work ethic to the back line.
