Axel Tuanzebe #4
DEF · Burnley · Qualifying hero · DR Congo
Profile
One unconventional goal in the 99th minute against Jamaica was enough to end 52 years of waiting for an entire nation. “Chancel told me to attack the ball on the corner,” Tuanzebe smiled afterwards. “I scored with my stomach, but that’s not my problem. The game is over and we’re qualified.” Born in Ituri, the defender instantly became a symbol of pride in his conflict-scarred home region after sending DR Congo to the World Cup. A former Manchester United academy captain, Tuanzebe once looked destined for a Premier League career but recurring injuries stalled his progress. Elegant on the ball, modern in his defensive approach and naturally charismatic, he hesitated for years before committing to DR Congo. Since making the switch, however, he has become indispensable. In his first 11 caps, DR Congo lost only once: against Algeria at Afcon. Nearly lost his thumb in 2024 after a freak accident in the kitchen while doing the washing up.
