One of the select few footballers who fans have forgiven for playing for both rival Prague clubs. An easy-going character, Zeleny is in no way a rebel or troublemaker, but he can be impatient, particularly when driving his car. “It annoys me when someone dawdles at the lights because they are on their phone,” he says. “That’s when I lean on the horn. Otherwise, I’m calm. People say you need to be ruthless in top football, but it’s not in my nature.” Zeleny is unlikely to change his nature now as he approaches his 34th birthday. He has never left the Czech league, making over 300 appearances since his debut for Hradec Kralove in 2010. Earlier in his career, he may have lacked the courage to move abroad; now he’s nearing the end of his time as an evergreen of Czech football. Fittingly, his surname translates to “green” in English.
