Kastaneer was a promising talent at ADO Den Haag and had already signed a pre-contract at German side FSV Mainz, when disaster struck during a game against PEC Zwolle. Shortly after opening the scoring, the ball struck his eye, causing a torn retina. The team doctor immediately took him off but Kastaneer was not happy and said “Come on, man, I can just play with one eye, or not?” – believing he had only got pitch pellets in his eye. The injury turned out to be far more serious, leading to a lengthy lay-off and the cancellation of his move to Mainz. Since then, he has played with 30% vision in one eye, but has continued his career and it has not been a bad one. He has played for clubs such as Kaiserslautern, Coventry City and Hearts, before moving to Spain, Indonesia and Malaysia, where he plays for Terengganu FC.
