Nurtured as a winger in the Ajax academy, Martha was suddenly moved to left-back during a season with the reserves – a switch that eventually led to his first-team debut. He adapted quickly and played his first five games in the Eredivisie with the senior side in that position. “I find playing left-back pretty OK,” he said with a smile after a match against Heerenveen. “The difficult thing is you drop back two lines. In the beginning, I found it a bit difficult.” After speaking to his coach, family and friends, he was advised to “just switch the button and do your thing there” and says he eventually felt “I’ve got it in me”. Having developed he moved to Beerschot in 2024 and now plies his trade in League One with Rotherham United.
