“The World Cup is a childhood dream,” Pépé said recently. “It’s the biggest competition in world football. I’m 30 now and I think this will be my only chance to play in one because there’s no guarantee I’ll be in the national team by the time I’m 34.” After playing at four Afcons and failing to qualify for two World Cups, the winger faces the challenge of his life. The skilled dribbler remains one of the key players of this Côte d’Ivoire side – and one of the loudest voices. A big presence in the dressing room, Pépé often shares videos of his teammates on social media. The former Arsenal winger is serious about playing for the national team too: “I have given my head for this team by shaving my Mohican since Under-17 level,” he said, a way of showing his respect for the badge.
