Fofana and Côte d’Ivoire have not always been a match made in heaven. After switching his allegiance from France in 2017, the box-to-box midfielder was absent from multiple squads in the years that followed until he played a starring role in the team that won the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations on home soil, starting in the final against Nigeria. Having lost his starting spot in recent times, playing only a bit-part role at Afcon 2025, the 31-year-old has put together a good enough run of form in the second half of the season at Porto – winning the league title – to warrant a place on the plane.
