Juan Quintero #20

MID · River Plate · Playmaker · Colombia

Profile

Only two players have scored goals for Colombia in more than one World Cup. One is Juan Cuadrado and the other is ‘Juanfer’, who, having scored against Ivory Coast in 2014, snuck a free-kick under the wall against Japan four years later. Quintero is known for coming up with the spectacular. He won goal of the tournament for his strike against El Salvador at the 2013 Under-20 World Cup and an extra-time stunner helped deliver River Plate the 2018 Copa Libertadores title against their superclásico rivals Boca Juniors. But away from football, Quintero has had to live with personal tragedy. His father went missing in 1993, when he was two years old. “I have the right to know what happened to my father and that is what I want to know because I’ve suffered and I’ve seen my family go through it,” Quintero said in 2020, when Eduardo Zapateiro, who was investigated as part of his father’s case (the pair had an argument shortly before Quintero’s father’s disappearance), was named commander general of the Colombian army.
