A former French youth international, for Steven Moreira the World Cup is a home coming. Since signing with Columbus Crew in 2021 he has been one of the most consistent defenders in the MLS. In 2023 he lifted the MLS Cup with the Crew and a season later, he was named Defender of the Year. Cape Verde’s starting right back will have to hope the Blue Sharks don’t come up against Scotland at the World Cup. The 31-year-old was spotted in the crowd when Rangers beat Celtic 3-1, leading to the sacking of Moreira’s former coach Wilfried Nancy. The defender became public enemy No 1 after the match when he defended Nancy saying, “I really think that the MLS is way, way better than the Scottish League. I was very surprised how bad it was. That’s just my opinion.”
