It’s not often that a player’s hair earns its own nickname, but Shaffelburg’s golden locks were known as the “Tennessee Waterslide” at his previous club Nashville SC, a nod to how the mullet flows behind him when he’s sprinting. His game may not be as flashy as his hair, but he is still an effective, tireless runner who knows how to strike the ball with power and technique. Born in Nova Scotia, Shaffelburg has form for rising to the moment on the big stage, having shone for Canada at the 2024 Copa América. He moved to Hollywood with LAFC last December, and arrives at this World Cup in a positive mood. Shaffelburg says playing under Jesse Marsch suits him: “The style of play just kind of fits me. He tells me just to get in and run behind, and that's all I want to do in general. It's right up my alley.”
