A striker until his teenage years, Cornelius still has some solid attacking instincts, as shown when he scored a fine long-range free-kick in a 1-0 friendly win against Wales last year. “I was working on it in training this week,” he said. “I felt confident and was in a good space, and I got good contact and it went in.” Typically, though, he’s known as an old-school centre-back, not shy to throw himself in front of, or at the ball in order to protect the box. With a CV that includes stops in Serbia, Germany, Canada, Greece, Sweden, France and now Scotland, Cornelius brings plenty of experience, but has also had a difficult season with Rangers, his loan spell undermined by injury problems. He will be hoping to prove the doubters wrong alongside Moïse Bombito in the heart of Canada’s defence.
