Joel Waterman #5
DEF · Chicago Fire · History maker · Canada
Profile
Waterman made history in 2020 as the first player from the new Canadian Premier League to transfer to an MLS club, when he joined CF Montréal from Cavalry FC. That proved a shrewd decision for Waterman, who had been playing at the Canadian university level in 2018 before joining Cavalry. He has grown into an important player for Montréal, becoming one of the club’s captains during his last few seasons. A former midfielder, he is comfortable on the ball but also aggressive defensively, which has helped him become a regular in the national setup and for his new club, Chicago Fire. Waterman is also part of a big sporting family: he is married to Carli Grosso, sister of Canada midfielder Julia Grosso, who is engaged to the Houston Astros baseball star, Jeremy Peña.
