The NBA legend Karl Malone was called “The Mailman” because he always delivered, but Meunier was literally working as a postman before he turned pro. Another big career switch soon followed while he settled in at Club Brugge: he began as a left winger, then moved all the way across the field to become a right-back – and a very good one, too. His natural ability in the position earned him a big move to Paris Saint-Germain in 2016 where he won a string of honours, and then to Dortmund in 2020. Now 34, he said recently he hopes to keep playing until he is 40. But if the end comes sooner than that, he won’t be bored away from the game. Besides having three kids, he also has his businesses in Bastogne, where he grew up, including a rotisserie chicken restaurant, and his love for art. He likes to visit museums and even used to have a picture of Salvador Dalí’s The Persistence of Memory as his phone screensaver.
