Laimer had plenty of doubters when he left RB Leipzig for Bayern Munich on a free transfer in 2023 but, after failing to establish himself as a first-choice midfielder, he has reinvented himself as a right back, occasionally filling in on the left. Laimer is the epitome of a workhorse and, having been educated at Salzburg’s Red Bull academy, the perfect disciple for Ralf Rangnick’s Gegenpressing doctrine. “I want to be as unpleasant as possible on the pitch and I like it when things get physical,” he told Sports Illustrated this year. “One-on-one duels and intensity have always been important parts of my game.
