The combative midfielder brings balance and bite to his national and club teams as he plays with an edge first and elegance second. Born and raised in Brisbane, O’Neill found his feet as a teenager in the lower leagues in England before returning to Australia on loan with his hometown A-League club. His potential truly started to shine through after a move to Melbourne City where he became the captain and a midfield enforcer. O’Neill points, barks and organises the team from the centre of the pitch and took on another leadership role with Belgium club Standard Liège before moving to New York City last year. O’Neill is now setting standards in the Big Apple while occasionally allowing his mind to wander to home comforts. “I own a farm as well, that's something I'm pretty passionate about,” he said. “We run cattle there, so that's a big part of my life off the field.”
