Most Algeria fans know very little about French-born Mastil, who was only called up a few months before the World Cup, but he has long been a fan of the Fennecs. Mastil, who qualifies for Algeria through a grandfather, told L'Équipe: “I grew up supporting the Algerian national team. When I saw them at the 2014 World Cup and the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, it made me dream.” Now he has the chance to build a long-term future with his grandad’s country. The 26-year-old has spent his entire professional career in Switzerland and has most recently been on loan in the second division with Stade Nyonnais. With Algeria in need of a refresh in the goalkeeping department, Mastil cuts an intriguing profile, standing at 1.93m and captaining his club. His potential ceiling appears higher than that of other Algerian goalkeepers in Europe, making him a strong candidate to serve as a reserve keeper for now.
